Symbiosis evolves when lineages experience a shared fate. Shared fate in evolutionary terms is necessarily tied to shared reproductive fate – where at least one of the lineages has no passage to the next generation except through the reproduction of the other. This frequently takes the form of vertical transmission from one generation to the next.
