Vertical transmission occurs when a lineage shares the fate of another lineage due to the former being transmitted from parent to child of the latter.  Germ lines that start out with high [[virulence]] can evolve to [[symbiosis]] if their transmission (their own reproduction) is limited to the children of those infected.
