Symbiosis evolves when lineages experience a shared fate.  Shared fate in evolutionary terms is necessarily tied to shared reproductive fate -- where at least one of the lineages has no passage to the next generation except through the reproduction of the other.  This frequently takes the form of  [[vertical transmission]] from one generation to the next.
